Michelle Payne Returns to Loreto with the Melbourne Cup

Michelle Payne (Class of 2003) returned to Loreto College last week, accompanied by the Melbourne Cup and her horse, Prince of Penzance, as part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.

Our very own Michelle Payne (Class of 2003) returned to Loreto College last week, accompanied by the Melbourne Cup and her horse, Prince of Penzance, as part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour.

Speaking to Year 9 students, Michelle shared stories of growing up as one of ten children in the Payne family, overcoming family tragedy, her memorable years at Loreto, and the determination it took to rise in a male-dominated industry to become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup.

Michelle attended Loreto College from 1998 to 2000, leaving at the end of Year 9 to pursue horse racing. She spoke fondly of her time at the College, recalling that she never wanted to leave but, as her father told her, “you can’t do both.” What she loved most were the friendships she made, and although it's been 25 years, many of her close friends remain from her Loreto days.

From the age of seven, Michelle declared that one day she would win a Melbourne Cup. Entering the racing world at fifteen, she faced countless challenges, but she never let them stop her. In 2015, she rode Prince of Penzance to victory, making history and inspiring millions. Her remarkable story went on to inspire the 2019 film Ride Like a Girl, with several scenes filmed right here at Loreto.

Michelle’s visit left a lasting impression on our Year 9 students, who were inspired by her courage and unwavering belief in following her dreams. Her message to them was simple yet powerful. Work hard, stay true to yourself, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve something.
